You intrigue me, Merlin. Why does a lowly servant continue to risk everything for Arthur and for Camelot? You know the answer but you’re not telling me. Why? Come on—time and again, you put your life on the line. There must be a reason. You think you’ll be recognized, Merlin, is that it? All this so one day you can be a serving boy to the king? No…there’s something more.

I must confess: I was a bit disappointed with the way this episode (mostly) used the Merlin/Arthur dynamic for comic relief. Their relationship is rife with teasing and banter, sure, and yes, they were definitely as married as ever, but I think we’re at a point where we could use more serious scenes to balance it all out, you know? This scene, therefore, is my favourite M/A moment of the episode, AND ARTHUR ISN’T EVEN THERE.  

I have a weakness for any situation where someone calls out Merlin’s loyalty and implies something deep behind it. Everyone sees it, and I’m really glad it was Morgause who did the interrogating—I don’t know if it’s because Emilia Fox blows most actors out of the water and makes every line sound extra pretty and poignant, or if it’s because I am dying for Merlin to reveal that he’s more than just a simple servant. She seems to severely underestimate him and the moment Merlin proves himself—not just his magic, but that sometimes, your love and faith for one person is more important than power—is going to be delicious.

This is why I love you, Michelina. These were my thoughts EXACTLY as I was watching the episode and this scene. I was getting kind of frustrated with the lack of seriousness until this scene happened and then I was so pleased with how this entire thing played out.

I particularly loved Merlin’s struggle with his silence, the way that Morgause’s words affected him and how obvious it was that he wanted to just explode with the truth, but he knew that he had to wait and let her taunt him. I loved both Emilia and Colin in this scene because the chemistry was so perfect and the delivery was A++. This season is going to be brilliant, just because of this plotline.

^ GIRL, YOU SAID IT WAY BETTER AND FAR MORE CONCISELY THAN I EVER COULD. Just, yes. ♥ Particularly the bit about wanting to explode with the truth. I think that’s Merlin in a nutshell, you know? I love it when they give Colin scenes like this. And totally, I’ve been wanting more scenes between Morgause and Merlin ever since the poisoning. I think Morgause suspects more about Merlin than Morgana does, really. And who knows what she’s seen in that crystal of hers? I would actually love it so hard if this entire scene was just a test to confirm whether or not Merlin has magic, but alas, I don’t think that’s what went down. That’s okay, though, because I still really love the idea of Merlin finally getting to explode. ;) I think I would actually cry if this scene were paralleled at some point. WITH THE TRUTH TOLD AND WITH ARTHUR THERE.
